Paytm's profit jumps over 10 times to Rs 225 crore as a tiny Soundbox does the heavy lifting
Revenue rose 28% to Rs 2,648 crore in July to September 2026. Here is how shop loans and a new UPI fee fit into Paytm's money story.
Picture a tiny speaker on a chai stall counter. A customer scans a QR code, and the box calls out "received Rs 20". Now picture that same little box sitting in 1.64 crore shops across India. That box is a big reason why Paytm just had its best quarter in years.
On 26 October 2026, One 97 Communications, the company that runs Paytm, shared its results for July to September 2026. Its profit grew more than ten times, to Rs 225 crore, from Rs 21 crore a year ago. It was the company's sixth profitable quarter in a row.
First, what do these words mean?
Revenue is all the money a business brings in from its work. If a samosa stall sells 100 samosas at Rs 20 each, its revenue is Rs 2,000.
Profit is what is left after paying for everything: potatoes, oil, rent, the helper's salary. If the stall spends Rs 1,700, its profit is Rs 300.
A quarter is three months. Companies report their numbers every quarter, like a report card that comes four times a year.
The big numbers
Paytm's revenue from its work rose 28% to Rs 2,648 crore, up from Rs 2,061 crore in the same three months last year. It also earned Rs 182 crore of other income, mostly interest on the cash it keeps, which took total income to Rs 2,830 crore.
On the other side, total spending was Rs 2,531 crore. The biggest single cost was payment processing charges, the fees Paytm pays to get payments processed, at Rs 805 crore.
Here is where the revenue came from.

Payments brought in Rs 1,434 crore, up 25%. Selling loans and other money products for partners brought in Rs 912 crore, up 49%. Marketing services, such as ads shown inside the app, brought in Rs 287 crore.
Why did profit jump ten times?
Ten times sounds like magic. Part of it is simply that last year's number was small. In the July to September 2025 quarter, Paytm took a one-time hit of Rs 190 crore after writing off a loan it had given to its own real-money gaming company. A one-time hit is like a stall owner losing a whole day's earnings once because the gas cylinder burst. It is painful, but it does not happen every day.
Leave out such one-time items, and Paytm's profit grew 9%, from Rs 211 crore to Rs 229 crore, as Moneycontrol reported. That is a slower story, but a steadier one. Compared with the previous three months, profit rose by Rs 5 crore, from Rs 220 crore.

There is also a cleaner way to see the business. EBITDA is profit before interest, tax and wear and tear on machines, so it shows how well the daily work makes money. It rose 90% to Rs 270 crore, and for the first time it was 10% of revenue. In samosa terms, Rs 10 of every Rs 100 sold is now left after the daily costs.
How a tiny box makes money
Paytm's plan is simple to say. It wins shops and people through payments, then earns from loans, insurance, gold and ads. Shops pay about Rs 100 per device for the Soundbox, after taxes and discounts. Paytm added 27 lakh such shops in a year.

Once a shop uses Paytm every day, Paytm can see how much money flows in. That helps it match the shop with a loan. The loans are given and held by partner lenders, not Paytm. Paytm acts like a matchmaker and earns a fee, so it does not need to lock up its own money. More than half of its shop loans now go to repeat borrowers.
Shops paid through Paytm worth Rs 7.1 lakh crore in the quarter, up 26%. On the customer side, 8.5 crore people used Paytm every month, 1 crore more than a year ago. Paytm's UPI payment value grew 42%, while all of UPI grew 19%, as per the release.
MDR: the small fee that could change UPI
MDR means Merchant Discount Rate. It is a small fee a shop pays on each digital payment it receives, like a commission on every samosa sold. Some payments, like credit cards used on UPI, already carry it. Most UPI payments to shops have not, which is why UPI, the most used way to pay, earns Paytm very little today.
That may change. Paytm's release says NPCI, the body that runs UPI, has notified a fee framework for some UPI payments to shops, to start after Diwali on a date still to be announced. The proposed cap is 0.4%, only on select payments above Rs 2,000, and not for every type of shop. On a Rs 2,500 payment, 0.4% is Rs 10.
Today, Paytm keeps a little more than 0.04% of the value of shop payments as its margin, which is about Rs 4 on every Rs 10,000. It expects the new fee to add about 0.025% more, roughly Rs 2.50 on every Rs 10,000, and says the real effect may take two to three quarters to settle. Moneycontrol notes the fee could begin from mid-November.
Paytm is careful here. It says it does not depend on UPI fees for profit, and that any such fee would be an extra, not its base.
What else changed
Until December 2025, Paytm also got incentive money from the Payments Infrastructure Development Fund. That money has now stopped. Leaving it out, Paytm says revenue grew 33%, faster than the reported 28%.
The company also says artificial intelligence is doing more of its work, in fraud checks, loan collections and personalising the app. Its indirect costs fell from 52% to 46% of revenue in a year. At the same time, its team of sales staff grew from an average of 44,154 to 51,832 people, as per the release. Paytm had Rs 13,617 crore in cash at the end of September.
Why it matters to you
For shoppers, a UPI fee is paid by the shop, not the buyer. For shop owners, the Soundbox has become more than a speaker: it is a doorway to small loans. And for anyone starting a career, Paytm's quarter shows a common business idea: offer something people use every day for almost nothing, then earn on the services that come with it.
