Micron will now share profits with its staff every three months, not just once a year

After pressure from unions in Taiwan, the US memory chip maker adds a quarterly bonus, paid half in cash and half in shares, for its teams worldwide.

Picture this. Your company has a great three months and makes a lot of money. Instead of waiting a whole year to share a little of it, the company hands you a slice every three months. That is the new promise from Micron, one of the biggest memory chip makers in the world.

On Thursday, 22 October 2026, Micron said it is starting a new quarterly bonus for employees worldwide, linked to how much profit the company makes. It came after months of pressure from worker unions in Taiwan, where Micron makes most of its chips.

First, who is Micron?

Micron is an American company that makes memory chips. Its CEO is Sanjay Mehrotra, who leads the whole company. Memory is the part of a phone, laptop or server that holds information while it works, a bit like the desk where you spread out your notes while studying. Two main kinds are DRAM (short-term memory for computers) and HBM, a very fast memory used in AI servers.

Micron is the third biggest DRAM maker in the world, with a 23.3% share of the market by revenue, behind Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. The AI boom has made memory chips very hard to get, so their prices and Micron's profits have shot up. In its fiscal third quarter, which ended on 28 May 2026, Micron reported record sales of US$41.46 billion and net income of US$28.24 billion.

What exactly is changing?

A bonus is extra money on top of your normal salary. Until now, Micron paid an annual incentive bonus, which means a bonus once a year. The new quarterly bonus will come every three months, and it will be in addition to the yearly bonus, not in place of it.

Think of a tea stall owner. On a great month, the owner shares a part of the extra earnings with the helpers. The better the month, the bigger the share. A profit-linked bonus works the same way: the more the company earns, the more the staff get.

Here are the main details, as reported:

  • Half cash, half shares. The bonus will be paid 50% in cash and 50% in Micron shares. A share is a tiny piece of ownership in the company. According to Business Korea, the cash comes after each quarterly earnings announcement, while the shares build up every quarter and are handed over once a year.
  • Starts in fiscal 2027. The new system begins from Micron's 2027 fiscal year. A fiscal year is a company's own 12-month accounting year, which does not have to start in January.
  • For everyone. The unions in Taiwan pushed for it, but the plan covers Micron employees worldwide.

The yearly bonus stays. The quarterly bonus is added on top.

How will the bonus be worked out?

The size of the bonus pot will be based on net profit after tax, minus the money Micron plans to spend on capital expenditure in the next quarter. Capital expenditure means spending on big long-term things like new machines and factories. Imagine a samosa stall that keeps aside money for a new fryer before sharing the rest of its profit with helpers.

Then each person's share depends on their performance rating, the grade a manager gives you for your work:

  • "Exceeds expectations" or "greatly exceeds expectations": 110% of the standard amount
  • "Meets expectations": 100%
  • "Needs improvement": 35%

A better rating means a bigger slice of the quarterly bonus.

One thing is still unknown. Micron has not said what percentage of profit will go into the bonus pot. So nobody outside the company can yet say how big each payment will be.

Extra perks for workers in Taiwan

Micron also announced changes only for its staff in Taiwan. It will raise retirement contributions to 10% from 8% and add three days of paid leave. A retirement contribution is money the company saves for you every month, to be used when you stop working. If a salary were Rs 100, the company would now put away Rs 10 instead of Rs 8.

The company also plans structural wage increases, meaning it will fix pay so that newer workers are not paid more than people who have been there for years. Micron aims to finish these changes by the second quarter of fiscal 2027 and, if possible, before the Lunar New Year.

Donghui Lu, chairman of Micron Taiwan, said the changes came from the demands of unions in Taoyuan and Taichung, two cities in Taiwan. He said a clearer and more predictable bonus system was what the unions wanted most. He also said the quarterly bonus is new money and is not taken out of the yearly bonus.

Why did the workers push so hard?

A union is a group of workers who join together to bargain with their company, like a class that sends one leader to ask the principal for a longer break instead of each student asking alone.

Taiwan is very important for Micron. The company has about 15,000 workers there, and Taiwan makes about 60% of its production capacity. In September, Micron offered Taiwan staff rewards worth 35 to 68 months of pay for fiscal 2026, including a bonus of NT$1 million (Taiwan dollars) for people on the payroll since 29 August 2025.

The unions said that was not enough, because it was a one-time reward and not a fixed rule. They wanted a permanent system that shares 15% of operating profit as bonuses every quarter. Operating profit is what a company earns from its main work before interest and tax. They pointed to Samsung Electronics, which agreed to share bonuses equal to 10.5% of operating profit with its chip workers.

In early October, the Taoyuan union said its members had voted for a strike. A strike is when workers stop working to press their demands. Seoul Economic Daily reports that 1,994 of 2,258 members, or 88.3%, voted yes.

Is the fight over?

Not fully. The Taichung union, which represents about 12,300 workers, reached a deal with Micron on 21 October. Its terms were not made public. The Taoyuan union, with about 3,000 workers, did not agree and began a 24-hour warning strike on 22 October. Only 11 union officers took part, and ordinary members stayed at work. More talks were planned for 23 October.

Why should a young Indian care?

Micron is not far away from India. It has opened a chip assembly and test plant in Sanand, Gujarat, built with a combined investment of US$2.75 billion. When Micron first shared its plans for this plant in 2023, it spoke of creating up to 5,000 new direct roles.

The bigger lesson is about how pay works in fast-growing industries. In many companies, your salary is fixed, but your bonus moves with the company's results. When you get an offer letter, look at three things: the fixed salary, how often the bonus is paid, and whether part of it comes as shares. This Micron story shows that workers in the chip industry are now asking for a clear, written share of AI-era profits, and companies are starting to answer.
