Mahindra gets 800 acres in Nagpur for its biggest car and tractor plant

The land for a Rs 15,000 crore factory changed hands on 26 October 2026, with more than 20,000 direct work roles expected.

Picture 800 acres of open land on the edge of Nagpur. In about two years, cars and tractors are meant to roll out of it. On Monday, 26 October 2026, Mahindra & Mahindra took possession of 800 acres in the Additional Butibori industrial area of Nagpur. This land is for its biggest car and tractor factory, a plan worth more than Rs 15,000 crore. The project is expected to create more than 20,000 direct work roles.

Here is what happened, how big this plant will be, and what a giant factory can mean for the people and the city around it.

What exactly happened on Monday?

The land was handed over by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, or MIDC. This is the state body that built Butibori into an industrial area for Nagpur. Think of MIDC like a landlord for factories. It gets big plots ready and hands them to companies that want to build.

According to ET HR World, Mahindra has paid MIDC more than Rs 706 crore for this first piece of land. Divide Rs 706 crore by 800 acres and you get roughly Rs 88 lakh for every acre.

This is only the first part. Mahindra has been allotted 1,500 acres in total. "Allotted" means set aside in your name, like a seat booked for you on a train before you board. The other 700 acres are expected to be handed over later.

Officers from MIDC handed over the land to a Mahindra team. The team included Vinay Khanolkar, chief operating officer of Mahindra's automotive division, and Nitin Vaidya, plant head of the Nagpur project.

How big is this factory going to be?

Once fully running, the plant is planned to make over 5 lakh vehicles and 1 lakh tractors a year. Spread over 365 days, 5 lakh vehicles is about 1,370 vehicles a day.

Mahindra says this will be its largest integrated manufacturing facility in India. "Integrated" simply means many steps happen in one place. Picture a samosa stall that makes its own dough, its own filling and its own chutney, instead of buying each one from a different shop. The plant brings both cars and tractors together on one big site.

The car side will build vehicles with different kinds of power. That means regular fuel engines, electric vehicles and newer technology. It will also support next generation vehicle platforms such as NU_IQ. A platform is like a shared skeleton: many different car models can be built on the same base, the way one phone design can come in many colours and sizes.

The tractor side will serve farmers in India and buyers in other countries too.

Why Nagpur?

Nagpur sits in Vidarbha, the eastern part of Maharashtra. Mahindra first announced the plan on 6 February 2026, at an event called Advantage Vidarbha. The event was held to show the region as a growing place for industry.

In that announcement, Mahindra listed what Vidarbha offers. There is road access through the Samruddhi Expressway, strong rail links, and easy reach to markets in India and abroad. In simple words, it is easier to get parts in and finished vehicles out.

Butibori is not new to factories either. Its Wikipedia page says around 100 industries work in the area, with about 35 more under construction.

One thing to keep in mind: the Rs 15,000 crore is not all for Nagpur, and it is not spent in one go. Outlook Business reported that the money will be spent over ten years in Maharashtra. It also covers land in the Igatpuri-Nashik region, where Mahindra wants to grow its current product and engine capacity.

What does a giant factory do to a city?

The big number is 20,000 direct roles. "Direct" means people employed by the project, not by other firms around the plant. A big plant also pulls other businesses along with it.

Take parts. Mahindra is also building a 150-acre supplier park in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. A supplier park is a cluster of smaller companies that make parts and send them to the main factory. Think of the shops around a big wedding hall: the caterer, the flower seller and the tent house all grow when the hall is busy. This park will send parts to the Nagpur plant and to Mahindra's older plants at Chakan and Nashik.

The state government expects the region to gain. When the plan was announced, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the investment "will generate significant employment" and speed up development in Vidarbha and nearby areas.

How much each town really gains will only be clear once the plant is built and running.

Who will get to work there?

Mahindra plans a skilling centre in Nagpur. It will train people in areas such as mechanical operations, welding and painting. A skilling centre is like a coaching class, but for factory work instead of exams.

The company also said experienced people from its current factories will get a chance at roles in the new plant. Over the next two to three years, they can go through a detailed selection process. It will look at technical skill, behaviour, fit with Mahindra's values and how well they work with others.

Mahindra said more details on how many people are needed, and on the openings, will be shared as the project moves ahead.

Who is Mahindra, again?

Mahindra & Mahindra was founded in 1945. Today the company is one of the largest SUV makers in India. The Mahindra Group calls itself the world's largest tractor company by volume, which means it sells more tractors by count than anyone else.

Mahindra already has a tractor plant in Nagpur. This video, posted by Mahindra Tractors, goes inside that existing plant.

What happens next?

Production at the new facility is set to begin in 2028. Before that, the factory has to be built and workers have to be trained. The remaining 700 acres are also still to be handed over.

The land deal has moved step by step. In early September 2026, The Hitavada reported that MIDC had allotted the land and Mahindra was in the middle of acquiring it. Now the first 800 acres are in Mahindra's hands.

For young people in Vidarbha, the next two years are worth watching. The skilling centre, the hiring plan and the supplier park will show how many of those 20,000 roles reach the region.
